Millions Want to Know

Why Deaf-Led Ministry Matters

Imagine wanting to know God but never
seeing His Word in your language.

That’s the reality for most Deaf people today. Even in countries with strong churches, many Deaf communities have never had access to the Bible in their own sign language. They may see hearing believers worship, yet never understand the message.

Access is not the same as exposure. If the gospel isn’t signed, it isn’t truly accessible.

When Truth Can't Be Seen

There are more than 70 million Deaf people worldwide. Fewer than 70 sign languages have any portion of the Bible translated. That means most Deaf people have never seen the stories of creation, redemption, or resurrection in the language of their hearts and hands.

Without sign language Scripture, spiritual conversations often stop at the surface. People can read words, but the truth doesn’t reach their hearts.

Deaf Leaders, Deaf Movement

Something beautiful is changing that story. Deaf believers are leading Bible translation and discipleship themselves.

At DOOR International, we believe Deaf people are not just the recipients of ministry. They are the leaders God has called to reach their own communities. When Deaf people sign Scripture to other Deaf people, barriers fall. Eyes light up. Faith becomes personal.

If the gospel isn't signed, it isn't accessible.

In Asia, a young Deaf woman we’ll call Shanda* grew up in a Christian home with hearing parents. Her father was a pastor, and she faithfully attended church each week, but the sermons were spoken, not signed. Though surrounded by believers, she couldn’t truly understand the Word of God.

One day, while walking to school, Shanda met some Jehovah’s Witnesses. They communicated with her in sign language, something her church had never done. Her mother pulled her away but saw how deeply that small act of communication affected her daughter. She tried to teach Shanda the Bible herself using gestures and “home signs,” yet the message still wasn’t clear.

Around that time, Rajeev*, a Deaf staff member with DOOR International, met Shanda while serving in the field. He could share the gospel in her sign language. Through that, Shanda began to see Scripture in a new way. Her mother, once hesitant, soon rejoiced to see her daughter learning God’s Word in her own language.

Today, Shanda continues to grow in her faith within a Deaf-led church community where she can finally understand, worship, and learn alongside others in her heart language.

Her mother later shared, “If my daughter had not been able to understand the gospel through Deaf ministry, she might never have had the opportunity to know God’s Word or experience salvation.”

This is the power of Deaf-led ministry! When Deaf believers share the gospel in sign language, families and generations are transformed.

What 'Knowing' Looks Like

When the Word is available in sign language:

  • Churches multiply because Deaf believers can lead, teach, and baptize.
  • Deaf parents teach Bible stories to their children for the first time.
  • Entire communities move from isolation to purpose.

That’s what knowing looks like, understanding the Truth for yourself and seeing Jesus clearly.

How You Can Help

  • Watch and share our one-minute I Want to Know video.
  • Pray for Deaf leaders bringing Scripture to life in their languages.
  • Give, if you feel led, to help fuel translation and discipleship worldwide.

Together, we can help Deaf communities know the Truth—because the Truth changes everything.
